Name: In-Line Electron Beam Sterilization Tunnels in the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Industries ( WEBEBEAM )
Description: In-line sterilization tunnels using electron beams have become a reality since the development of low and medium energy accelerators small enough to fit into self-shielded units for integration in production lines. This webinar examines the many advantages of these systems for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. They provide fast continuous room temperature sterilization which is simple to validate and traceable. The economies are apparent in terms of time, logistics, fixed assets costs, labor costs, etc. Environmental impact is considered low. The low energy surface sterilization systems which have been installed on 19+ prefilled syringe lines have recently benefited from technology improvements for increased efficiency. High energy systems for terminal sterilization of medical devices, filled syringes, or vials, have already been installed.
Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the benefits of in-line e-beam as a sterilization method
  • Discuss validation techniques for the integration of an e-beam system in the pharmaceutical process
  • Know how the low energy systems evolved to meet new requirements from customers and the pharmaceutical industry
  • Find out about the progression from low energy to high energy in-line tunnels, the latter being used for complete terminal sterilization
  • Understand how electron beam power and beam energy are adapted to treat a particular product
  • Be aware of customized conveyors, shields, and interfaces for in-line e-beam units
